NORMA JEAN BAKKA

Norma Jean Bakka was born on the White Earth Reservation in Minnesota and is an Elder of the White Earth Band, Minnesota Chippewa Tribe. "I believe I have become an Artist over my life time, while preserving my culture and heritage. It is a combination of my history of learning, hands-on with Native American Art that I have the gift of being an Artist. By sharing my knowledge with people, they gain understanding of Native values, and respect Native American people, and their traditional Ojibwa proud way of life. I will continue my journey as an Artist."

KENT ESTEY

Contemporary Native American artist Kent Estey is an enrolled member of the White Earth Nation of Ojibwe in Northwestern Minnesota. Kent’s lineage includes many self-taught artists where black-ash basketry, beading, birch-bark, and fiber artistry were everyday occurrences in his home. Kent’s preferred art form is painting with oils, acrylics, and inks. His paintings reflect feelings and emotions through his use of color and movement on the canvas. Kent says, “a lot of the time the art happens by listening to my feelings. The colors, movement, and elements fall into place creating something beautiful and intimately meaningful.” Some of his most recent work incorporates the use of rock, metal, and collage on canvas and board. Kent’s work has been exhibited in Minneapolis, Saint Paul, Bemidji, and other regional exhibitions and galleries in Minnesota.

Growing up on the Leech Lake Indian Reservation in Northern Minnesota, Annie lived in a home filled with voices made of thunder and nothing could stop it. Her parents were brilliant people individually – her father, a singer and musician and her mother an artist and poet. Together they made sadness. Each taught Annie the beautiful things they knew. They showed her that she carried their gifts in her hands too. This is how creating art and music came about for her. This is  what saved her. This is how she lives now. Annie has 4 children and 2 grandsons. She has a handsome, Indian, horseman husband. They inspire her spirit and her art.
